[2] Switch Or Stick? Monty Hall Problem Simulation In Excel
The 'Monty Hall' problem is based on a popular television show of the sixties 'Let's Make a Deal'. In the Excel version of the quiz you will be presented with three gift boxes. One box conceals a valuable prize, the keys of a luxury car, and the other boxes are empty.
Start the game by selecting one of the 3 boxes. Next, as Monty used to do, one of the other boxes is opened by the host (my VBA macro!). The box opened is always an empty one. Next, you must decide whether to stick with your first selection or to switch to the third unopened box. What you should do?
Most people argue that it doesn't matter, because the odds are 1 out of 3 (33 %) you will pick the right box. Then once one of the remaining boxes is opened, the odds change to 50/50. So, does it really matter, if you stick with your original selection or switch?
The Month Hall simulation in Excel is an attempt to bust the myth that there is no winning strategy and verify Marilyn's von Savant scientific explanation first published in 1990 in the Parade magazine. Have fun and please let me know your findings in the comments below!
